About Bioinformatics Centre

The DBT supported Bioinformatics Centre (BIC) was set up in 2022 at the Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology IIT Kharagpur. The mission of this centre is to provide a national level facility and expertise in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology by pursuing cutting edge research and development along with the focused man-power training in various fields of Bioinformatics and Computational biology. The faculty members involved in this centre has significant contributions in the area of Strcutural Bioinformatics, Biomolecular simulations, Big-data analysis in genomics, proteomics and systems level metabolomics analysis.

Aims and Objectives of the Centre

The aim of the centre is to pursue cutting‐edge research in the field of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, especially focusing on understanding structure function and evolution of regulatory networks with a special emphasis on human diseases. The specific aim is to develop algorithms, databases and software tools to address the outstanding questions in this field along with the development of human resources through training and teaching programs.

The major objectives of the centre are three folds:

  • To develop tools, software and Databases to understand the cellular functions at structural and molecular level.
  • Manpower development through training and teaching, by organizing workshops and symposium.
  • Cutting edge research and developments in the proposed thematic area.
